There's a point in building a serious home cinema where a single all-in-one receiver starts to feel like a limitation. The processing is locked to the amplification, you have little room to upgrade, and the trade-offs of cramming everything into one box start to add up. An AV processor is the way past that.

An audio-video processor handles just the signal side of the equation. It decodes every audio and video format coming into the system, handles source switching and room correction, then passes a clean, processed signal to dedicated amplification. Nothing is sharing headroom with anything else. The result is a more transparent and capable system that's also easier to upgrade over time, since the processing and power stages can each evolve independently.

What AV Processors Do

When an AV receiver handles both processing and amplification in a single chassis, each function is working within the thermal and electrical constraints of the other. An audio & video processor removes that constraint entirely. Paired with dedicated multi-channel amplifiers, a separate AV processor gives every speaker channel its own headroom, so you get cleaner dynamics and better low-level detail, and the soundstage holds together when you push the system hard.

It also opens up the rest of the signal chain. Pre-amplifiers, distribution amplifiers, and other AV components can be integrated around a processor, which isn’t possible with a receiver-based system.

What to Look for in an AV Processor

Not all audio & video processors are built to the same standard, and the differences count for more in a separate system where the processor is doing the heavy lifting.

Channel Count

The number of channels a processor can handle determines how complex a speaker configuration you can build around it. A well-chosen AV processor should have room to grow, supporting more channels than your current setup needs so the system can expand without requiring a replacement.

Format Support

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, and IMAX Enhanced are the key immersive audio formats for home cinema. A capable audio-video processor should handle all of them natively, decoding each at its highest available quality rather than converting down to a lesser format.

Room Correction

Built-in room correction that measures and adapts to your specific space noticeably changes how a system sounds in your room. Calibration quality varies a lot between AV processors, so it pays to know what's included before you commit.

Video Handling

For systems where video also passes through the processor, 8K pass-through and HDR format support (Dolby Vision, HDR10+) ensure the picture signal reaches the display without conversion or loss.
